Why You Shouldn’t Wait Any Longer to Get Your Flu Shot
Every winter, the flu makes its most unwelcome appearance, sending millions of people to their beds and couches in misery. To protect yourself and your family now is the time to get your flu vaccine.
At Chicago Immediate Care, our team of health care professionals is standing by to fight back against the flu with a simple flu vaccination. This incredibly easy step can safeguard your health through the winter months, but not if you wait until it’s too late.
Here is a look at why you shouldn’t wait to get your flu shot.
The making of a flu vaccine
The flu vaccine reduces your risk of catching the virus by 40-60%, which is a sound wager when it comes to your health. In fact, the flu vaccine is far more than a shot in the dark. Throughout the year, there are 142 national influenza centers in 113 countries around the world whose sole purpose is to track the flu to figure out which strain will emerge from one year to the next.
These centers then send their data to five World Health Organization Collaborating Centers for Reference and Research on Influenza, and the United States own CDC figures among this group. Experts from each of these five institutions then get together twice a year to analyze the worldwide data in order to predict which flu strain will likely be the most problematic.
Based on this highly educated guess, vaccine manufacturers get to work to come up with the right protection.
As you can see, there is a considerable amount of work that goes into the flu vaccine each year, which is how we are able to offer a vaccine that helps us stay one step ahead of this viral infection.
The young, the old, and everyone in between
The CDC recommends that everyone is vaccinated for the flu, starting as early as six months of age. There are some exceptions to this rule, such as those who are allergic to eggs, which is an ingredient in most flu vaccines.
And for people over the age of 65, we recommend a stronger flu vaccine due to the fact that older people have weakened immune systems and are more susceptible to the flu.
So barring newborns or those who have specific allergies, all members of your family can benefit from a flu vaccine.
Get a jump on flu season
The best way to protect your family is to get your flu vaccine before winter starts. Once the flu season is in full swing, your risk of exposure heightens, so it pays to have your protection in place ahead of time.
